You Waited Until Now, Tiger?

As of yesterday Steve Williams was no longer Tiger Woods caddie. This move came as somewhat of a surprise. It wouldn’t have been as much of one 18 months or even a year ago, but now? The timing seems a little odd in terms of trying to help his game. If an overhaul was needed why not do it when you’re changing your swing and your swing? Why not do it immediately after your whole life blows up and you’re in hiding? Or, how about after you’ve played a few tournaments in 2010 and your game’s clearly heading south?
I’m thinking that if a change was really needed, it was needed some time ago. If it just dawned on Tiger in the past two weeks that he needed to do this, than he hasn’t been paying attention to his game since
April 2010.
The firing of Steve Williams doesn’t look or smell much like an attempt to get his golf game back on the rails. Instead, it does seem a lot more like it was something personal. I think it’s a whole lot more likely that Tiger didn’t like where the two of them have been at lately. Maybe he didn’t feel like Williams was really in his corner since all his troubles became public. Maybe he felt betrayed when Williams asked to be able to work with Adam Scott.
Regardless of the reasoning, all is certainly not right between the two of them. You could hear it in Williams’ words after Tiger had made the move public. Certainly didn’t sound as friendly and professional as the statement making the announcement on Tiger’s Website. He sounded annoyed, hurt and angry. No, this doesn’t even have the appearance of a firing. It really has all the earmarks of a bitter divorce, minus the lawyers.
