Fans: They Love You, They Love You Not…

It’s always amazed me how fickle fans can be. They claim to be devoted to a team, yet they can be so incredibly quick to jump ship or become outwardly hostile. Fans claim to love the team and the players but don’t hesitate to become vocally belligerent at the first sign of trouble.

Yesterday the New York Giants defeated the 15-1 Green Bay Packers 37-20 at Lambeau Field. The Packers had been considered, for most of the season, to be the runaway favourite to win the Super Bowl this year and defend last year’s title. That is, until a week or two ago when the New Orleans Saints started getting that kind of buzz as their offence heated up even more towards the end of the season. Then the Saints were defeated on Saturday. So much for New Orleans and their 'absolutely unstoppable’ offense.

That left the Packers to defeat the Giants, then the San Francisco 49ers, followed by whoever represented the AFC, in order to ascend to their rightful place on top of the football world. Apparently the Giants didn’t get the memo. A recently rejuvenated defense and an explosive passing game dominated the Pack almost from the start. By the end of the 1st half (during which the Giants had just scored a last second near miracle touchdown) it was obvious the Packers were up against it and would have to play a terrific 2nd half just to have a chance to win the game.

Through the latter part of the 1st half, a smattering of boos could be heard wafting down from the stands. At the end of the half there was a decidedly louder wave of jeers and catcalls directed at the Packers as they left the field. Apparently the super passionate and dedicated Packer fans had reached the limit of their fandom.

The noise changed to positive in the 2nd half when Green Bay managed to move the ball and start to rally but the heckling started again as soon as the game went south for the Packers.

It just reinforced how conditional the fans love of team is. The devotees only love you when you’re winning, and that includes Wisconsin’s ‘Cheeseheads’.
