The Winnipeg Jets have reached their moment of truth, at least for this season. With their blown third period lead last night against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Jets head out onto the road possibly having to win all 3 games on the trip.
An additional point or two would have put them in a better position going into their last 10 games of the 2011-12 season. However, after the loss they are still 2 points behind the Washington Capitals for 8th place in the Eastern Conference. The Jets play difficult games in Pittsburgh, Washington and Nashville this coming week and need to have a successful trip to keep their playoff hopes alive.
If ever there was a put up or shut up scenario, this is it. The Jets have played above most people’s expectations (including mine) by staying in the hunt this long. The coming road trip will tell us if they’re ready to really challenge for a spot in the post-season tournament. From the beginning of the season the Jets have been a difficult team to beat at home but have had their share of troubles winning on the road. If they can pick up at least 4 points this week they’ll likely still be in the race. Should they lose all 3 games, they’ll be just as likely out of it.
This week will be as difficult a test as they could face trying to clinch a playoff spot. If they do well this week, and eventually make the playoffs, it will have been an accomplishment well earned. If they blow up on this road trip then they just might be done like dinner by the weekend.
