Somehow I was surprised to read that the troubled Ryan Leaf had been arrested once again. I probably shouldn’t have been, since this is the way these things usually seem to go. Celebrities seldom seem to learn their lesson from a bad episode or two.
I saw Leaf being interviewed by Dan LeBatard on DLHQ in conjunction with the release of this book, 596 Switch: The Improbable Journey From The Palouse to Pasadena. He seemed to be honest and contrite as far as his past mistakes and weaknesses were concerned. He seemed to be genuinely ready to move on and lead a more mature and responsible life. Apparently that wasn’t the case, since he’s been arrested twice in the past several weeks on charges similar to the ones he plead guilty to in 2010. Two years ago he was convicted of burglary and controlled substance charges and sentenced to 10 years probation and fined $20,000. Obviously a stronger penalty is required for the message to get through to Leaf, who’s already been to rehab in hope of abandoning the painkillers he’s been too dependent on since his playing days.
Sad to see the struggling former NFL quarterback hasn’t managed to get his life in order. Here’s hoping he takes advantage of any opportunity he gets from the courts in response to his latest alleged offenses.
