The uninitiated
wouldn’t have learned much from checking out this week’s coverage of the Super
Bowl
I must admit, I haven’t been immersed in sports coverage
since last week’s NFL Conference championships, but any coverage I’ve seen on
Sports Centre or other sportscasts hasn’t been very meaty. If I were not much
of a sports fan, but had suddenly decided to engage myself in national and local
sports reports, I wouldn’t know much more about the game, the matchup and the people
involved than I did at the beginning of the week. Here’s what I would have
learned from watching the media’s coverage of the game in the first week
leading up to the game:
1) Jim Harbaugh is the coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
2) John Harbaugh is the coach of the Baltimore Ravens.
3) Jim and John Harbaugh are brothers.
4) This is only the 2nd time in NFL history
(the teams played each other during the 2011 season) and the first in a Super
Bowl that brothers have coached the opposing teams.
5) Ravens defensive great Ray Lewis is retiring after 17
seasons and is a really wonderful person (Note: it’s never mentioned he has six
kids with four different women and plead down to a charge of obstructing
justice from one of 2nd degree murder in 2000).
That’s about it. Harbaughs, Harbaughs, Harbaughs, close
family. Ray Lewis, inspirational leader. Harbaughs, Lewis, blah, blah, blah.
How about discussing the team matchups. Profiles on someone other than the
teams’ coaches and that linebacker guy. Please give us something, anything!
Anyway, if I watch the tube at all today, I think it’ll be
shows I’ve recorded. Thank goodness for the PVR. I’ll ignore TV coverage of the game altogether. Forget the
hype; let’s get to the game already.
